Title: The Poisoner’s Ring
Author: Kelley Armstrong
Published: May 23, 2023
Format: e-ARC
My Rating: 5 stars/5

Synopsis: Edinburgh, 1869: Modern-day homicide detective Mallory Atkinson is adjusting to her new life in Victorian Scotland. Her employers know she’s not housemaid Catriona Mitchell―even though Mallory is in Catriona’s body―and Mallory is now officially an undertaker’s assistant. Dr. Duncan Gray moonlights as a medical examiner, and their latest case hits close to home. Men are dropping dead from a powerful poison, and all signs point to the grieving widows… the latest of which is Gray’s oldest sister.

Poison is said to be a woman’s weapon, though Mallory has to wonder if it’s as simple as that. But she must tread carefully. Every move the household makes is being watched, and who knows where the investigation will lead.

My thoughts from the Vault

Disclaimer: I received an e-ARC of this book. I chose to review it and this in no way impacts my opinion of it.

I was so incredibly excited to receive an e-ARC of The Poisoner’s Ring because I really enjoyed book one in the series, A Rip Through Time , and I was thrilled to be able to find out what Mallory and Duncan got up to next.

The story begins with Mallory going undercover with police officer Hugh McCreadie to a pub in Old Town to listen for information regarding a poison ring. Two recent poisoning deaths in the city have led the police to believe that women are poisoning their husbands to be free from them.. but could the answer be that simple?

I found the murder mystery of this novel to be fascinating and exciting. When someone very close to Isla and Duncan Gray is accused of murdering her husband, the need to discover the murderer becomes overwhelming.

I absolutely love the setting of Edinburgh in 1869. I’ve never really been one for historical fiction but I find this series brings the present day into the past quite naturally as Mallory struggles to learn the ways of the world in 1869 and also keep her identity as an accidental time traveller hidden.

This series so far has been an exciting rollercoaster ride and I cannot wait to continue it. If you enjoy mysteries with a dash of time travel, this is the novel for you!
